Movie review on 'LIFE OF PI'

LIFE OF PI
 STORY

Based on Man Booker-prize winning novel 'Life of Pi' by Canadian author Yann Martel , this film tells the incredible survival story of Pi, a teen stranded on a lifeboat for what seems like forever, with a tiger for company at sea in the pacific ocean.

REVIEW                                                                                                       Starting out with the older Pi (Irrfan khan) recounting his unbelievable life story to an author (Rafe spall), we travel down memory lane and are briefly introduced to Pi's    childhood in picturesque Puducherry(Pondicherry),Piscine Molitor Patel (AyushTandon),named after a French swimming pool,is the young son of a zookeeper in Pondicherry,India. When his name leads him to becomes an object of ridicule at school, he takes the initiative and shortens it to Pi.                                                                                                   Pi is not only creative , he is also spiritual, which comes as a surprise to his secular parents who belive in the supremacy of reason and science. Pi is a Hindu who is comfortable with the idea of many gods and with his hero Krishna, but he also finds himself attracted to Christianity and Islam. He meets regularly with a priest and gets a prayer mat to pray five times a day. Although his father opposes this multifaith approach, Pi refuses to give up thich rich and rewarding path .                                                                                                   In a linchpin scene, Pi wants to connect with Richard Parker, a Bengal tiger in the family zoo. When his father comes upon him trying to feed the huge cat. he is very angry. Pi belives that animals have souls whereas his father believes that they are wild beasts of prey who are not to be trusted. He goes on to teach his son an indelible lesson about the tiger.                Just when the 16 years old Pi(Suraj sharma) is getting interested in girls, his father decides to leave India and move to Winnipeg, Canada, the family and some of the animals board a Japanese cargo ship. In a terrible storm, the boat sinks and Pi is the only human survivor . Soon afterwards he is joined in a small lifeboat by a Zebra, a Hyena,an Orangutan, and the Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The teenage boy who has compassion on for all creatures watches in horror as the war for supremacy between the animals begins. In the end, just he and the tiger are left .

Ang Lee has fashioned the only visual successor to the 3-D artistry of Avatar, amazing us with a scenes of a dazzling school of flying fish, the marvels of luminous jellyfish, the leap of a humpback whale, and ocean water as a source of beauty and terror. In addition, Lee's use of digital technology is magical, espeially in the many different scenes involving Richard Parker .                                                     Pi is convinced that God has a plan for his life and during his 227- day ordeal at sea, he is repeatedly confronted by mysteries as he squares off against the tiger and then decides to make peace with him. He must also come to terms with his grief over the deaths of his father, mother and brother . Pi is not prepared for the improvised nature of his life on the boat with Richard Parker. He discovers that the tiger can't be tamed but he can be trained. He admits to himself that his fear of the tiger keeps him alert but his tending to both of their daily needs gives his life purpose.                                                                                                         In the closing section of Life Of Pi, the adult protagonist (Irrfan Khan). now living in Canada, finishes telling his story to a journalist. He reveals that his story to a journalist. He reveals that his spiritual adventure was puzzling to those who interviewed him after he successfully landed in Mesico. They insisted upon a reasonable version of what happened .                                                                                                                                                        The story is magical and mysterious "Life of Pi" is truly a groundbreaking movie masterpiece and a beautiful work of art ever made. Ang Lee has created a cinema masterpiece that will long be a very -memorable film due to the breathtaking cinematography and beautiful scenery .

Bridge course: Aristotle's Poetics

Aristotle's Poetics

What is your understanding about Aristotle's poetics ?

In this blog I am sharing my understanding about Aristotle’s Poetics.

What is Aristotle’s Poetics ?

Facts

Also Known As Aristoteles
Born 384 BCE • ancient GreeceGreece
Died 322 BCE • ChalcisGreece
Founder Lyceum

Plato was a great poet , a mystic and a philosopher . Aristotle the most distinguished disciple of Plato . He was a critic ,scholar , logician and practical philosopher . He is known for his critical treatise;(1) The poetics and (2) The Rhetoric dealing with art of poetry and art of speaking . He was a codifier; he derived and discussed the principles of literature as manifest in the plays and poetry existing in his own day . Aristotle agrees with Plato in calling the poet an imitator and creative art , imitation. He imitates one of the three objects . 1. things as they were/are 2. things as they are said/thought to be 3. things as they ought to be .
Aristotle believes that there is natural pleasure in imitation , which is in - born instinct in men . in a grown up child - a poet ,there is another instinct , helping him to make him a poet - the instinct for harmony and rhythm .

poetry, therefore, is more philosophical and a higher thing the history , which expresses the particular, while poetry tends to express the universal . Therefore , the picture of poetry pleases all and at all times.
Further in the 'poetics' Aristotle is giving the definition of Tragedy " Tragedy , then, is an imitation of an action that is serious , complete , and of a certain magnitude; in the language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament , the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action , not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation -catharsis of these and similar emotions Aristotle's poetics : six parts of Tragedy. 1. the spectacle , which is the overall visual appearance of the stage and the actors. The means of imitation (language, rhythm , and harmony) can be divided into . 2.melody / songs , and 3. diction 4.character 5. though6. the plot (fable)
I have tried to give an overview about Aristotle’s Poetics, an idea about what Aristotle is talking about in poetics. To read in detail about it click on this. Thank you for reading.

Questions

1).How far do you agree with Plato’s objection to freedom of expression and artistic liberty enjoyed by creative writers? Name the texts (novels, plays, poems, movies, TV soaps etc which can be rightfully objected and banned with reference to Plato’s objections)

Ans. We live a good life because we live our life with morality, but if we want to live a perfect life, we should follow the ideas of Aristotle, but I agree with Plato's freedom of expression and objectionable artistic freedom by writers. According to me, Plato is right because many films, magazines, categories are producing bad impressions in society and spoil the minds of people. It also creates a sense of concern for the thinkers.

2) With reference to the literary texts you have studied during B.A. programme, write brief note on the texts which followed Aristotelian literary tradition (i.e. his concept of tragedy, catharsis, tragic hero with hamartia etc)

Ans. During my B.A program, I studied the play 'Othello' tragedy drama, it is itself Othello. I think these things are like Hamartia, evil errors, anarchy of judgment. Othello kills his wife, but when he realizes the reality, he feels very sad

3.With reference to the literary texts you have studies during B.A. programme, write brief note on the texts which did NOT follow Aristotelian literary tradition. (i.e. his concept of tragedy, catharsis, tragic hero with hamartia etc.)

Ans,I have studies during B.A. programme, write brief note on the texts Othello did NOT follow Aristotelian literary tradition.
